Excerpt from Diseases of Melons and Cucumbers During 1903 and 1904 The soil in certain portions of West Virginia, especially along the Ohio River, it admirably adapted for the growing of water melons and muskmelons. An attempt is being made to grow cucumbers for pickles, but as yet it has not been definitely deter mined with what' success they can be grown as a crop. One riding through the Ohio valley can see large fields of melons, the combined area of which would be several hundred, and possibly several thousand, acres. The yield from some of these fields during a favorable season is a source Of considerable income to the growers, while other fields are almost a total failure, in so far as quality, at least, is concerned, the yield also being somewhat less. The decrease in yield, as well as the poor ¿avor Of the melons, is attributed to a blight which attacks and de stroys the vines. The blight is so destructive at times, that the prospects of a good crop are changed Within a few days, Late in the Autumn Of 1903, I made an attempt to find out the cause of the blighting, continuing the investigation the next year, with the thought that if the cause of the blight could be determined, a means for its prevention or control could be applied later. It was so late when the investigation was begun that it was possible to get only a few leaves, the Vines having been killed for the most part either by the blight or the frost. However, some Of the leaves which were obtained had fungi on them that122 west virginia experiment station.
