THE MEISSEN SCHOOL OF DRAWING - A LIVING TRADITION SINCE 1764 Dear Friends of Meissen Porcelain, Once again it is a special pleasure for me to present you a selected compilation of the best works of my students in the form of this drawing school calendar. After the Weltbuch Verlag took over the publication of this traditional calendar last year, it is continuing this with the 2021 edition in a new format. With 33 x 44 cm, the calendar now grows taller in order to enhance the drawings that are predominantly in portrait format. And that is not all. Another special feature can only be found on the 200 limited edition calendars: a platelet made of Meissen porcelain with the world-famous Meissen swords, the oldest registered trademark in Germany. The Meissen Porcelain Manufactory systematically began training newcomers and passing its knowledge of the famously unique Meissen style of painting on to future generations of porcelain painters way back in 1743. Ever since the "School of Drawing" was inaugurated in 1764, however, the three-and-a-half-year course of training has first involved learning the basic principles of drawing and conducting nature studies. Porcelain painting enters the curriculum in the second year and the road to perfection is an arduous one for our students, extending far beyond the actual period of training and demanding a great deal of commitment, ambition and endurance. Indeed, a striving for perfection is, alongside the necessary talent, a crucial requisite for anyone wishing to embark on training with MEISSEN. The School of Drawing attaches a lot of attention to nature studies, a process enabling students to approach porcelain in a very personal way. They undergo intensive tutoring by the Manufactory's training staff, moreover, by whom they are taught the basics underpinning the requisite technical and artisanal skills. A two-year stint of further training in the production workshops serves to qualify the young specialists for speedy incorporation into the exclusive painting units. This traditional method of training, one that dates right back to the earliest days of Kaendler and Höroldt, has been ensuring the continued existence of Europe's oldest porcelain manufactory ever since. We are proud that our training for Manufactory porcelain painters has formed part of the UNESCO Commission's Intangible Cultural Heritage. In this edition of the calendar, Julia Abaimov's "Stuffed Petunias" adorn the cover page - a work from 2000, the detailed drawing of two sunflowers with a honey bee by Taisiia Breiter from 2015 in August whets the appetite for summer, while in December, Teresa Keller's "Shoes and Toys" from 2009 is intended to remind us of the time of presents from Santa Claus. Several outstanding animal and flower motifs are seamlessly intertwined. The "Stuffed Poinsettia" in November is again a drawing from my own hand - as my personal contribution to this calendar. I hope you enjoy browsing through and discovering it. Get well through the new year 2021.
