Diaspora Language Contact
BücherAngebote / Angebote:
This book is an innovative contribution to contact linguistics as it presents a rarely studied but sizeable diaspora language community in contact with seven other languages across twelve different countries with contributions following a coherent approach. Morpho-syntactic and lexical innovation, including code-switching, are the central focus of analysis. Presentation of morpho-syntactic and lexical forms goes beyond a descriptive-only one, and encompasses contemporary models in contact linguistics. Diachronically based research on Croatian and South Slavic languages is drawn on that has located the influence of internal and external factors in language change. Comparable phenomena appearing across samples suggests the influence of factors internal to change and innovation that can happen in Croatian that is triggered, supported or accelerated through contact with other languages. The book is foregrounded by sociolinguistic information and a contextualisation of the Croatian-speaking populations in each of the following countries: Western Europe - Austria, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, the Anglophone 'New World' - Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States, and Latin America - Argentina and Chile. The book represents an advancement in contact linguistics through a coordinated and systematic presentation of language contact situations involving one language with a large number of others.
