Low-order polynomials in a linear model will probably suffice. Where well established algebraic forms already exist for the form of the relation, the exact hypothesis is already available and evaluation can be initiated. The more common and perhaps more challenging circumstance, however, involves some intermediate 'level of prior knowledge where the analyst is sure of some elements in the relation being considered and less sure of others. His or her deliberations on the nature of the relation may result directly in a mathematical hypothesis or, more commonly, they may result in a graphed form wherein the analyst imposes reasonable intercept form and scale-constraints.
