The condensed representations of the main features of declension and conjugation, as found on pages 140 - 143 and 192-197, are meant for all the lessons save the very first. As soon as the beginner's vocabulary allows, the teacher should explain these tables, and teach him to use them as a constant guide in the midst of the bewildering mass of forms. In this way the view of the whole will never be lost in the struggle for mastery over the details. In the Zweite Stufe disconnected sentences are used only here and there for illustrations, while every grammatical principle is elucidated by means of Sprachstiicke. In the Dritte Stufe, Dichterworte or quotations from poets and prose-writers take the place of the sprachsmcke, each quotation presents in its completeness a beautiful, serious, or humorous thought worth remembering. It is believed that the book contains abun dant material to meet the demands of the advanced entrance requirements in German grammar as fixed by the leading colleges.
