Description of Asiatic Costume Plate

Excerpt from Description of Asiatic Costume Plate: Museum Extension Project, Works Progress Administration, Pennsylvania, District-15In Turkey most of the wealthier class have adopted Western dress, and there are few examples of the traditional Turkish costume available. The dress of the woman shown here is as it is worn in the harem. It consists of a sleeved gown of white silk gauze which very often is edged with Silk point lace, though in this instance it is plain. This is worn in accompaniment with full baggy trousers, also of silk (sometimes brightly colored). Over the trousers is worn a long coat fitting tightly to below the hips. In full dress, another coat, trailing on the floor, with elaborate patterns in colored silk, gold, and silver thread, and sometimes even pearls, is worn over the entire ensemble. This outer robe is usually a rich, luxuriant garment. The woman shown here wears a heavy fringed sash low on the hips and has covered her hair with a green scarf made decorative with a small scarf and some silver ornament.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
