You will thus understand that a written literature and the written appreciations of that literature are a spiritual history of a people, and that it is the function of a Professor of Literature to discover a people's ideals as they are preserved in their literature, to reveal them to con temporary generations and to hold them up for contemplation by the aesthetic, the moral, and the religious imagination.
