Excerpt from Curtis's Botanical Magazine, or Flower-Garden Displayed, 1819, Vol. 46: In Which the Most Ornamental Foreign Plants, Cultivated in the Open Ground, the Green-House, and the Stove, Are Accurately Represented in Their Natural Colours, To Which Are Added, Their Names, Class, Order, Generic and Specific CharacteristicsIt is su¿iciently hard to bear the cold of our ordinary winters without shelter, ut is liable to be much defaced, and in severe frosts to be quite killed, as happened to a very large shrub of this kind which stood for many years in the Apothe caries Botanic Garden at Chelsea, near the entrance. It should never be trusted abroad in frosty weather when young, and indeed it always appears much handsomer in the greenhouse or conservatory. N the late Dr. J ohn foranagill's green house at Upton, there was one little inferior in size to that at Chelsea, and much more beautiful, which was sold for forty pounds, when this valuable collection was brought to the hammer.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
