Excerpt from Cumulative Method for Learning German: Adapted to Schools or Home Instruction
The fact is, to these classics, so called, we owe our grammars for living languages, they have been scrupulously fitted and hammered over a very old last by scholastics and pedagogues, no doubt to revenge themselves upon later generations for having been themselves handled so unmercifully when young.
Permit me once more to return to my musical simile. There are keyboards, having seven and a half to eight octaves, upon which the simpler instrumentations of a Clementi to the grand conceptions of a Chopin or a Liszt may be performed. Equal in compass are the keyboards of writers like Macauley, Carlyle, or a Byron, to whose wealth of words no emotion of the head and heart - from utter despair to infinite bliss -are left expressionless.
