In trans lating a work of this nature, the value of which mainly consists in the precision and subtlety Of its exegesis, it is essential that there should be a close and careful reproduction of the form of the original, but, in looking over the sheets, I find not a few instances in which the desire to secure this fidelity has led to an undue retention of German idiom.
