Excerpt from Courtship in Seventeen Hundred and Twenty and in Eighteen Hundred and Sixty: Romances of Two Centuries
In the early part of the last century, some few years after the career of the pugnacious Charles of Sweden had been abruptly terminated by that cannon-shot at Friedrichshall, the burghers of the free town of Zweidorf found no little difficulty in trimming their sails so as to escape collision with their powerful and rapacious neighbors. It was true that the Elector of Saxony was pledged to protect them in the event of their being attacked. The little town paid an annual contribution to that needy potentate, in return for which he guaranteed its integrity. But the elector was notoriously given up to the pursuit of pleasure, and had been sore put to it more than once to take care of himself and guard his own territories. The good citizens of Zweidorf felt that there was no great dependence to be placed upon the electoral protection in time of need.
The seventeenth century had seen Germany pretty nearly desolated.
