Contrast nephropathy is a major and growing problem. It is the third most common cause of in-hospital acute renal failure and is associated with significant in-hospital mortality (20-30%, rising up to 62% for patients requiring emergency hemodialysis), long term mortality, increased risk of in-hospital major adverse cardiac events as well as with prolonged hospital stay and increased costs of health care.
