Excerpt from Companion to Roman History
This book was planned as a companion volume to the Companion to English History (middle Ages), edited by Mr. Barnard. That it follows the earlier work after a consider able lapse of time is due to the fact that it has been written by a single author instead of a number of contributors. The subjects treated are, for the most part, the same, but it has been thought desirable to deal in the present volume only with such aspects of Roman life as could be illustrated from material remains, and to exclude those which may be ade quately studied in manuals unprovided with illustrations. The author desires to express his obligations to Professors Oichorius, Delbruck, Haverfield, Puchstein, and Schneider, Dr. T. Ashby, Major Schramm, and Horace Sandars, Esq., f.s.a. And the following publishers, Messrs. Fontemoing Oie, Herr Wil helm Engelmann, Messrs. Giesecke Devrient, Signor E. Loescher, Mr. B. T. Batsford, Herr Georg Reimer, for per mission to use illustrations and other services rendered.
