The Text is taken from a Psalm written, as is gene rally supposed, during the Babylonish Captivity, and is eloquently expressive of the combination of adverse circumstances under which the Jewish Church was then suffering, a captive Church and people a strife unto their neighbours, and their enemies laughing them to scorn, distracted, as is probable, by internal dissensions, and insulted as powerless by external adversaries, the wild boar out of the woods rooting it up, and the wild beasts of the field devouring it, all the powers, forms, and principles of evil arrayed against it.
