Er besuchte die Stadtschule seines Heimatortes, sodann das Praparandum und Seminar zu Mirow. Nachdem er sechs Jahre im Lehramt tatig gewesen war, ging er nach Berlin und bereitete sich privatim auf das Gymnasialabiturium vor. Ostern 1905 erhielt er nach einer Prüfung am Kaiserin Augusta Gymnasium zu Charlottenburg das Zeugnis der Reife.
