During this period a story bearing on the Talk may be told and pupils led to express their ideas upon it, or they may give a written or oral reproduction of it, or describe a picture, illustrating the topic. The writing lesson may be a maxim, proverb, or gem, bearing on the same subject. The study and memorizing of a poem or gem may come in the period devoted to literature. The prose and poem gems may do duty as reading lessons after the beauty of the thought and language have been enjoyed and analyzed, and the ethical truths conveyed by them understood, or the reading lesson of the day may be chosen from the readers with reference to its bearing on the subject in hand. The ethics of the New Education calls for more careful thought and planning on the part of the teacher than haphazard and merely incidental teaching, but such planning will prove the ounce of prevention to the epidemic of crime that is sweeping over our country. It will prove the stitch in time to save many later. It being the aim and purpose of this work to help teachers as much as possible along these lines, to aid them as exponents of the Ethics of the New Education, the usual order will be reversed and the first place and most space will be given to Heart or Moral Culture.
