These laws are evidently contradictory. The law recorded in Lev. 22: 8 relates to the priests and says, That which dieth of itself, or is tom of beasts, he shall not eat to defile himself therewith, I am the Lord. In Lev. The law relates to the laity, And every soul that eateth that which dieth of itself, or that which is torn of beasts, whether he be homeborn or a stran ger, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean. But if he wash them not, nor bathe his ¿esh, then shall he hear his iniquity. Compare these declarations with the version of the law found in Deut. 14: 21, which reads, Ye shall not eat of anything which dieth of itself, thou mayest give it unto the stranger that is within thy gates, that he may eat it, or thou mayest sell it to the foreigner: for thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God.
