Excerpt from Cavalry Experiences and Leaves From My Journal, 1892I need hardly say those Letters and Journals were never intended for publication, this may easily be seen from internal evidence. My family, however, kept all my letters and papers, which were sent back to me some ten or twelve years ago and, as they contain accounts and remarks on Military matters and Cavalry experiences, I have thought that sufficient time has elapsed when they may appear in print.I was some sixteen years in the army before I saw any active service, all of which time I had served in the Infantry, but, having met with a severe accident while serving in the 68th Light Infantry in Canada, whereby I sustained a compound fracture of the right leg, I was pronounced unfit for further service in the Infantry, by a Medical Board.I was on detachment duty with part of a Company at Rivière du Loup, a small place on the river St. Lawrence, when I was ordered to the Head Quarters of the Regiment at Lake Tamisquata, to attend on a Court Martial.
