Excerpt from Cathedral and University Sermons "And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of Me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome." - Acts xxiii. II. In the text we have the reward bestowed by our Lord for a bold confession of His name. Our Lord had promised a reward for every good deed done for His sake: even a cup of cold water given to a disciple for love to Him was not to go without its reward. I daresay you will think that no one deserved such reward better than St Paul. I suppose it would be hard to name any one who loved Christ better than St Paul, or was willing to sacrifice more for His sake. He had told the elders of Ephesus that the Holy Ghost had witnessed in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions were abiding him. "But, " said he, "none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the Gospel of the grace of God."
