Excerpt from Catalogue of the Teachers and Pupils of the State Normal School at Salem, Mass: 1854-1887The number of pupils in the school having largely increased, the principal, in his report to the Board of Education, in 1869, made such a representation of the wants of the school, that the Board applied to the Legislature for an appropriation of to provide for the cost of enlarging the schoolhouse. The appii cation was granted arid the work of enlargement was begun in August, 187 0, the school occupying meanwhile the lower story of the City High School building, the use of Which had been freely granted by the city authorities.
