Excerpt from Cardiff Free Libraries: Catalogue of Printed Literature in the Welsh Department
Cardiff Free Public Library embraces the twelve counties of Wales, and, less fully, the four border counties (monmouthshire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Cheshire), the history of these counties being closely associated with that of the Principality at different times. It also includes books in or relating to the other Celtic languages, such as Gaelic, Breton, Cornish, etc. Besides the printed books given in the following Catalogue, the collection contains a large number of manuscripts and prints, drawings and photographs, which have yet to be catalogued.
The work of bringing together books and manuscripts relating to Wales was commenced by the Library Committee about ten years ago. At that time there was no large library of this charac ter in Wales open freely and at all times to the public, and with the exception of the public libraries at Swansea and Cardiff, the same is true now. The Committee's success is due to the steady perseverance with which the object has been pursued, and to the liberality of those public-spirited gentlemen who have contributed large sums of money from time to time for the purchase of books and manuscripts, and also to the donors who have made gifts of books and other items - photographs especially. Two collections have been purchased: (i) the library of the Rees family, of Llan dovery, which comprises printed books, manuscripts, and prints, and (2) the Welsh portion of the manuscripts in the collection of the late Sir thomas phillipps, which, besides the manuscripts, included a large number of topographical drawings.
