Excerpt from Cadore, or Titian's CountryThis alone ought to redeem it from neglect, and considering the numbers in these days to whom Titian is more than a name, the many with whom as the prince of Venetian art he stands the rival of the proudest among Venetian doges and captains - who feel indeed that Venice herself, while the fabric of her merchant princes was crumbling upon her shores, lived on in splendour by means of her painters in every treasure-house of art - it is strange that it has not done so.It is stranger still, while it explains the cause of the neglect, that till within the last few years the abode of Il divino Tiziano, ' as his countrymen love to call him, was so lost sight of that biographers and en quiring travellers alike reported it entirely unknown.
