Excerpt from Burg NeideckAll of Riehl's work centered about Kulturgesclzz'clzte, but popularly he is best known by his short stories, Novellen, or Gesclzz'clzten, as he preferred to call them, some sixty of which he produced. These all deal with, or are based upon, social and political conditions of Germany, and are therefore quite as much Kulturgesclu'clzte as anything he wrote. They were in part published separately, but are now collected in various volumes of his works. Burg Nez'deck, originally published separately, now forms part of the volume entitled A m Faz'er abend. This story was suggested to the author by a trip he took in company with his friend, the German poet Scheffel, to Burg Reichenberg, near St. Goarshausen on the Rhine, which serves as the setting for the tale. Riehl himself tells us in his Kulturgesc/zzklztlz'che Clzarakterkbp¿ how he thought out the plot of his Burg Na'deck, while waiting for his friend Scheffel. After their visit to Burg Reichenberg, Schefiel was so captivated by the beautiful castle and landscape, that he sat down under a nearby tree and spent almost a whole hour in sketching the scene. During this enforced rest, Riehl planned his story. According to his custom, he did not at once execute his plan, but allowed it to simmer for years.
