Brown Alumni Monthly, Vol. 90

Excerpt from Brown Alumni Monthly, Vol. 90: September, 1989Temkin describes the campus politi cally as well. Brown's emphasis on pluralism nurtures an atmosphere of political correctness, the latest form of political radical chic. A student who is politically correct must oppose capital ism, racism, homophobia, and clas sism. Have these foes of capitalism compared North with South Korea, East with West Germany? Have they been reading about events in China and the ussr?Henry Merritt Wriston was presi dent of Brown during my years on cam pus. Brown prided itself then on being a liberal university, but the word liberal was spelled with a small I. It meant open to new ideas. Today Brown is a Liberal university, with a capital L, refer ring to a particular political philosophy a particular conventional wisdom, hence closed to contrary ideas. It's the existence and uncritical acceptance of that conventional wisdom I object to, not its stripe. I'd be just as unhappy with a Conservative bias.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
