Why should a reader pick up Blue Mar?
How do we find belonging in a world ravaged by climate change? For some, the answer is to build a new home. Blue Mar takes us to a time in the near future, when the world's first plastic island-called Blue Mar-has been geo-engineered in the middle of the rising seas, out of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The story centers on two half-Latina sisters, who search for identity and belonging in their ancestral home of El Salvador while, all around them, the effects of climate change are growing harsher, and more people are leaving for Blue Mar. As a cli-fi (climate change fiction) novel, Blue Mar combines real-life climate research with science fiction elements, creating a story grounded in environmental justice, that asks: how do we stay resilient-and hopeful-in a world on the edge of collapse?
