A slight sketch of the writer of the within memoir, certainly will require no apology. It is given as a mere outline, leaving to a future time, something more minute and more worthy of her, which may be culled from her numerous papers and letters.
Elizabeth Bordley Gibson, daughter of John Beale and Sarah Bordley, was born October 21st, 1777. Her parents resided on Wye Island, Maryland, half of which was owned by her father. They retreated to Annapolis, the metropolis of the State, in consequence of the too near approach of the British army, and there, Elizabeth Bordley was born, amid the booming of cannon and the cheers of the people for the surrender of Burgoyne and his forces to General Gates at Saratoga.
She was most carefully educated solely by her parents at Wye, until she was thirteen years old. They then removed to Philadelphia, she was placed under the care of the most competent teachers, and at this time, she became a constant visitor in the family of General Washington, having masters with the granddaughter of Mrs. Washington, the celebrated Nelly Custis.
