Was die Bioethik dem Menschen zu sagen hat, das muss sie ihm in der entscheidenden und nachhaltigsten Hinsicht sagen, solange er noch jung ist, solange er noch offen ist für Weichenstellungen, die sein Leben prägen werden, weil er sich das Fragen nach dem Sinn und Ziel seines Lebensweges noch nicht hat abgewöhnen lassen. Der Weg der 'Integrativen Bioethik' ist der Weg vom akademischen Lehrer zu seinem Schüler. Wir gehen ihn natürlich in der Hoffnung und der Annahme, dass die Schüler einmal Handelnde und Entscheidende sein werden, aber wir gehen ihn bewusst dort, wo sie es noch nicht im vollen Ernst sind, sondern sich auf das, was ihnen einmal in voller Konsequenz persönlich, gesellschaftlich und politisch abverlangt werden wird, in der Ruhe des auf Wahrheit gerichteten und nach ihr fragenden Herzens vorbereiten können. Wenn nicht die Optimierung bilanzierbarer éLeistung' und Zweckrationalität das Ethos des Menschenbildners bestimmt, sondern das sokratische Versprechen an den Schüler, dass er ihn ihm selbst als einen Besseren zurückgeben werde als der, der er war, als er zu ihm kam, dann gibt es keinen grundlegenderen Gegenstand unserer bioethischen Reflexion als eben: Bioethik und Bildung. *** The idea of integrative bioethics cannot be separated from the concept of education. What we have to let the human being know can only be said to him in the most firm way and lasting way as a disciple and as a person still learning, as someone who has not yet given up the question concerning the meaning and the aim of his existence. The path of 'integrative bioethics' is also a path which leads from academic teacher to his student. We proceed along this path in the hope and the assumption that students will one day become decision makers. We want to teach them in a phase when they still can prepare for what later will be demanded of them personally, socially, politically. So we follow the Socratic promise to his student that we will return him a better person than he was when he first came. Therefore, there is no more fundamental object of our bioethical reflection than: Bioethics and Education.
