BATTERY LFIRST UNITED STATES ARTILLERYThis edition is a revised version of Through the Eyes of a Soldier, a hardcover published in 2017. Three years of additional research and careful editing have brought in interesting new details, yet produced a shorter and crisper product. As did the original, this edition is framed around the service records - the muster rolls and monthly reports - of Battery L, a regular army unit. Being Regular Army, Battery L was in service before the Civil War, fought in it to near the surrender (or the "death" as General Sheridan referred to it), and continued on afterward. They were serving in Texas when the entire U.S. Army contingent there was surrendered to the Texas authorities in February of 1861. They escaped. They then went on to fight in some far-flung and lesser known theaters of the war: Florida, Louisiana, Texas a second time - yet in 1864 found themselves in the Shenandoah Valley, destined to fight in all of those memorable and bloody battles that paved the way for Grant's final push that ended it.The author's interest in the preparation of this volume, as well as the original, is family history. His great-grandfather served in Battery L from February, 1860 to March, 1867.All profit from sales will go directly to the support of battlefield preservation.
