Excerpt from Babble O' Green Fields: And Other Poems
I bring my fistful of pebbles
From the beach of experience.
I, too, regret that they are not diamonds and rubies.
Child, they are better than pearls and emeralds.
They are enchanted stones,
Fashioned by the great deep,
Laid at your feet by the mighty tide,
That your heart might know the leap and ache
Of vast discovery, and you exclaim,
"Oh, what if this were chalcedon,
And that an amethyst!"
