Barber, Company D, 15th Illinois Volunteer Infantry: May to Sept, 30, 1865 On the 27th day of April, ad. 1861, I enlisted in a military company being formed at Marengo, Illinois, from the towns of Coral, Genoa, Hampshire, Seneca, Dunham, Marengo and Riley. At that time we had little hopes of being accepted under the seventy-five thousand call, so great was the rush of troops. Harley Wayne, one of the leading spirits in getting up the Company, was at that time Clerk of the Assembly of our State Legislature, and through his in¿uence mainly, we were accepted as a military com pany for the State defense, with the understanding that we should be transferred to the United States' service if the President called for more troops.
