Arithmetic Simplified (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Arithmetic Simplified Arithmetic is the art of figuring or calculating with numbers. The fundamental processes of arithmetic are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. A number is a unit or a collection of units. The word unit means one or a single object or thing. The figure 1 is the unit of numbers, one inch is a unit of English length measurement, one pound is a unit of weight, etc. The Reading of Numbers The different places for tho figures in a number are named as shown in the tabulated arrangement below. This number would be read three-hundred seventy-six billion, five-hundred three million, two-hundred seventy-six thousand, one-hundred twelve, in the same way 305, 636, 312 would be read three-hundred five million, six-hundred thirty-six thousand, three hundred twelve. By referring to the tabulated arrangement above, where the names for the different places in the scale of numbers arc given, it will be seen that each place to the left represents a value ten times greater than the next place to the right, thus 10 units make 1 ten, 10 tens make 1 hundred, 10 hundreds make 1 thousand, etc. When writing a number with figures, it is usual to write tho figures in groups of three each, beginning to point off from the right-hand side and placing a comma between each group, as, for instance: 52, 752, 126, 612. It will be noticed that the last group to the left contains only two figures. Of course, this group will contain one, two, or three figures, according to how many figures there are left in the number when groups of three have been pointed off from the right.
