Excerpt from Arguments of William W. Hubbell, Esq., Of Philadelphia, on Behalf of the Defendants, Before Hon. Samuel Nelson, in the Case of Ross Winans Vs. Orsamus Eaton, Et Al: In the Circuit Court of the United States of the Northern District of New-York, Against a Motion for an Injunction to Restrain the Defendants From Constructing and Vending the Railroad Cars Commonly Known as "Eight-Wheel Railroad Car"The Liverpool and Manchester road is proven to have had considerable curvatures. Mr. Thompson's dep., No. 8, p. 1, fols. 2, 3, testifies that it has considerable curvatures and yet these four wheel cars run over it.The counsel also adverted to the locomotive steam engine, and said that the idea of adhesion of the wheels did not exist prior to 1830, and, as authority upon this point, read from a book published in that year. And, while reading, it is not a little singular that this passage occurred, in substance The wheels slipped when snow was on the track, which Shows at once that the wheels propelled by adhesion to the rails. They were not cog-wheels, and the friction, or adhesion, was obvi ated by snow upon the track. It was not only known then, prior to 1880, as shown by the book from which he read, but we find it existing, in actual use, long prior to 1830, in numerous places. This is shown in food's Treatise in 1825, in the engine called the Wood engine.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
