Bacteria and fungi are the worst enemies of the regenerating Hydras. At first, water distilled in glass vessels was used, but later it was found that tap water gave equally good results. The Hydras them selves were the principal source of contamination of the water. Consequently those from the aquarium were washed once or twice by means of a gentle current of water directed upon them from a pipette before they were operated upon. It was found that the fewer the animals placed in the same Stender dish, the less like were fungous growths to appear, not more than six should be kept together. The water was changed about every other day and the dishes thoroughly cleansed. The larger fungous growths, which especially encumbered the tentacles, were removed by means of a needle and a current of water from a pipette. Hypotricha were frequently found wandering about over the surface of a Hydra. One Hydra, when taken from the aquarium, had three such companions, which were allowed to remain. Two days later, this Hydra was perfectly clean, although fungi had appeared in the water and upon Hydras which had been placed in other dishes at the same time.
