Excerpt from Annual Statement of the Trade and Commerce of St. Louis for the Year 1881, Reported to the Merchants' Exchange of St. Louis The problem of a just and equitable arrangement for the carriage of the freights of our country has agitated the public mind for a long time, and the very best talent has been employed to establish a system whereby each and every town and city should be placed on an equitable footing in regard to its freights. The question however is still unsolved, and each community is striving to obtain from those who control the great arteries of commerce such concessions as their various wants demand. St. Louis, although advantageously situated, with 'sixteen railroads and three great rivers, has labored under many disadvantages, and an attempt is now being made through the organization of a Freight Bureau to obtain for our city her just rights in the premises, and good results are expected to accrue in the near future. The amount of business in the past year, as indicated by the tonnage handled, shows a steady increase, as will be seen by the following table.
