Excerpt from Annual Report of the Health Department: Of the City and County of San Francisco for the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 1888 To the Honorable the Board of Supervisors of the City and San Francisco: Gentlemen: I have the honor to submit to you my report of the transactions of the Health Office for the year ending June 30th, 1888. During the year the deaths in this city numbered 6, 036 against 5.359 for the preceding year, of those 530 were Chinese, and 5, 506 were of other nationalities. I have estimated the population of this city at 330, 000, which gives a death rate of 18.27 per 1, 000 for the year, against 17.86 per 1, 000 for the year preceding, when the population was estimated at 300, 000. Estimating the Chinese population at 30, 000, the annual death rate among this people was 17.63 per 1, 000 Estimating the population of other nationalities at 300, 000, the death rate was 18.36 per 1, 000.
