In demselben briefe vom 13. Januar 1824 kann er bereits von einem tüchtigen, ihm natürlich noch nicht ge nügenden fortschritt berichten: "the writing of this weary 'schiller' has occupied me to the exclusion of everything beside. Nor is it finished yet! The third and last Part is not above half done, though it will be wanted in a few days. Till within the last weak, I could not for my heart begin it handsomely and honestly. The mercury had made me weak as any sparrow, and besides I was very idly-inclined. So I am now obliged to write like a Turk, and vex myself day and night that the thing is not done fester and better. Und um dieselbe zeit schreibt er in verbittertem tone: "this accursed Schiller is not finished yet and my mind has been full, disagreeably so often, of this miserable Schiller. Am 25. Januar meldet er Jane: "schiller will be done at last in about a week, God be thanked!
