Excerpt from An Investigation of Cyclonic Phenomena in New EnglandAttention has already been drawn to the fact that the storm tracks, illustrated in Chart I., fell into two distinct groups, those which cross New England in the north (nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12 and 13) and those which cross in the south (n 08. 6, 8, 9 and In the group whose paths lie outside of New England, all except N o. 16 passed north of the States in Canada. The aver ages appended to the table have been derived for each of these groups, it should be noticed, however, that the ranges are large and as the number of storms in each group is small, the numer ical averages must be regarded as only a rough indication of the true averages of a large number of similar storms. Comparing the values of the distance of the centre when rain or snow began with the values of the amounts of precipitation in Table I., it will be seen that in general the greater the distance of the centre the larger is the precipitation, but this is not invariably the case, as in Nos. 1 and 20 compared with Nos. 13 and 18 respect ively. Summer showers which may not begin until the storm centre is at its nearest point, or has even passed beyond it, often give more rain than accompanies other cyclones when the rain begins earlier and continues longer.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
