Contemporary Islamic Philosophy provides an overview of the philosophical contributions of twelve of the most prominent twentieth-century Islamic philosophers, many of whom hail from the Iranian philosophical tradition. It features translated excerpts from their philosophical works and explanations of their unique contributions to the field of Islamic philosophy, as well as a brief history of the development of Islamic philosophy and the state of Islamic philosophy today. The book discusses philosophers whose names are well known in the West, such as Ayatollah Ruhullah Khomeini, Ayatollah Murtada Mutahhari, and 'Allamah Muhammad Husayn Tabataba'i as well as some thinkers who have received less attention outside the Islamic world, such as Sayyid Ahmad Fardid and Mahdi Ha'iri Yazdi. Other philosophers featured include Sayyid Jalal al-Din Ashtiyani, Muhammad Taqi Ja'fari, Ayatollah Hasanzadeh Amuli, Ayatollah Javadi Amuli, and Ayatollah Muhammad Taqi Misbah Yazdi. Mohammad Fana'i Eshkevari studied both at the Qom seminary in Iran as well as McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he received his PhD in philosophy. He has published extensively on philosophy, mysticism, and religion.
