Excerpt from An History of the Origin and Establishment of Gothic Architecture
Part of the ensuing Inquiry on the Origin of Gothic Architecture was originally intended to have been given in substance in a work undertaken in the year 1800, and announced for publication by Mr. John Thomas Smith. The whole of the letter-press the present author had engaged to furnish, as he accordingly did, and the book was to have been entitled, "An Account and Explanation of the Paintings and other Ornaments and Decorations discovered in the Year MDCCC. on the Walls of the House of Commons." In the proposals circulated by Mr. Smith this intelligence had been promised for insertion in the then projected volume, and what was to have been there introduced on the above subject was, as well as the rest of the letter-press, actually written and completely prepared, but it was prevented by an accident from appearing in print.
