Excerpt from An Elementary Greek GrammarThe growing recognition of the importance, in the early years of education, of English and kindred subjects has led naturally to the postponement of Greek, which is now begun by the normal boy about thirteen instead of between ten and twelve. Boys thus come to the language with better-trained linguistic faculties and also with less time to spare for the preliminary stages. To define and simplify these preliminary stages, so that the beginner may pass on to read Greek authors with a Lexicon as soon as is consistent with practical efficiency and accuracy, is the object of the following pages. The writers have omitted everything which their experience as teachers of low classical forms shows to be unnecessary for beginners: the omission of the unessential has been the guiding principle of the book.
