Excerpt from An Appendix to Aristides's Vindication of the Vice President of the United States, by a Gentleman of North Carolina: Proving That General Hamilton at the Last Presidential Election Exerted All His Influence to Support Mr. Jefferson in Opposition to Mr. Burr The firll: infiance onv record, where the equivocat. Ing genius of Hamilton was apparent, is in his dence given at the trial of general Charles Lee in the year 1778. The fate of this unfortunate and brave officer on that occafion is well known, but time has obliterated many of the circumiiances which attended that remarkable trial. The intimacy which exilled between Hamilton and Lee previous to this period, and the friendihip and {ervices of the latter to the for mer, are now only recolleéled by the few remaining veterans of the day, who ilill exiit, witne¿bs of the open and heroic conduét of the one, and of the felfilh ingratitude of the other. He war 8 which general Lee, in his defence, applied to Hamilton, are no doubt {till frefh in his memory, and probably at times, in the corroding moment of guilty confcience, infiié't in his breal't a filent but nervous chafiifement. There is one part of Colonel Hamilton's evidence, I cannot help animaivertzng upon, it has hurt me be caufe it is even an impeachment of my qualifications as an officer, and it has hurt me the more, as it comes from a man of elteemed ferlie, and whofe valour I my felf was witnefs of, although it is not that fort of van lour, unlei's by praé'tice and philofophy, he can cor reel, will ever be of any great ferrite to the commu nity. Ingratitude of every defc1'iption, is certainly one of the molt filameful and detel'table vices, which can pollute the heart of man, but that ingratitude which betrays the friend and benefaéior in adverfity from a mean complaifance to power, is of all others the balielt and merits the fevereil ceniure. In making this remark, I truii it will not be fuppofed, that I ih tend any re¿eétion on the charaéier of vvafhington. I believe it has been long fince underflood, and there fore requires no repetition here, that with refpeél to General Lee's conduct at the battle of Monmouth, General Walhington was egregiou¿y impoied upon, by a fervile faclion headed by Wayne, and dragooned into exercife by the Baron Stuben.
