Excerpt from An Address on "Japan, Our Ally in the Far East, " by W. T. R. Preston, Esq., Commissioner of Commerce for the Dominion of Canada, Delivered in the Y. M. C. A. Hall, Victoria, Hongkong, March 21st, 1908You know the story, probably bet ter then I do. Japanese kept their counsel for ten tong years. Quietly and determinedly they prepared to stake er erything' on an effort to drive the Russian usurper back to his na tional boundaries at the appointed time. The nation was as one man. Such patriotic preparations and secrecy find no parcllel in history. Only once in the u' was the result of a battle in doubt, and that was for a while at Liaoyang. With that Rubicon crossed, the world calmly awaited the final result, believing that, it was only a question of time when from Port Arthur to the Siberian boundaries, the aggressor of ten years earlier would inevitably retire. But this time the West kept its hands off, -thc blunder of ten years earlier, resulting in a second War, the continuous fighting of the largest armies the world had ever seen together. Entailing a loss of half a million lives, the captureof the most impregnable tortrcu military genius ever constructed, the destruction ol one oi the greatest war ¿eets that had ever been constructed, teyetber with an expenditure of hundreds of mil lions of pounds, was not repeated. Japan came out of the conflict with a reputation for military genius that might have been envied by Napoleon Bonaparte. With the most stupendo ous collection of war trophies ever captured by a nation, and with a military supremacy that made the world wonder at the possibi es of the future, if this power to be controlled by the wise judgment of peaceful statermeu. Western diplomacy recognised in the result of the war the advent of a new fie-o to be reckoned with in the cannon. Of the nations, and especially an un welcome addition to the complica tions of the Pacific Ocean.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
