F. Libbie Co. For a copy of Poe' s second book Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems, Balti more, 1809, at the Appleton Sale in May. Mr. William N elson's copy of the book, with presentation inscription, signed, by Poe, and having also numerous corrections in his autograph, sold in the Peirce sale in 1903 for Uncut copies of the book had previously brought in the French sale in 1901 and in the mckee sale in 1900. The next highest priced single volume sold during the season, was a third Quarto of The Merchant of Venice, London, Printed by M. P. For Laurence Hayes, 1637, a duplicate from the Lenox collection, sold for the New York Public Library by the Anderson Auction Company on May 4. This brought The recent increase in value of all early editions of the separate plays of Shakespeare, the four folios, and early books by contemporaries which refer, even in an obscure manner, to Shake speare, or which may have been read by Shakespeare, is perhaps the most notable advance in prices shown in recent years.
