Affairs in Cuba

Excerpt from Affairs in Cuba: Speech of Hon. John C. Spooner, of Wisconsin, in the Senate of the United States, Friday, April 15, 1898The suggestion of want of sincerity upon his part, or an attempt to belittle his diplomacy would, if effective, lessen the confidence of our people in him and diminish his in¿uence with foreign nations during the con¿ict upon which we reluctantly enter. If we must go into war, as seems inevitable, he is, by choice of the American people, our leader, sworn to his duty, able and willing to dis charge it, and, as patriotic citizens, we are to rally around him, strengthen his arms, cooperate with his efforts, and, if there be aught in him, now or hereafter, which either a fair or an unfair man could criticise, let us wait until after the battle. From this time on to the end let us rather say to him, God bless and guide you. Lead on, we follow.I do not stop to make reply to the suggestion that his failure to recognize belligerency a year ago, or since, has been due to the in¿uence of Spanish bondholders upon the American Government.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
