Excerpt from Address of S. P. Hildreth, M. D., President of the Third Medical Convention of Ohio, Delivered at Cleveland, May 14th, 1839On the uplands, the principal growth of forest trees consisted of the various Species of oak, poplar, hickory, and chestnut. In some districts were found extensive woods of yellow pine (pinus mitts) and in tracts remote from the older settlements it is yet to be found in abundance. On the bottoms, or alluvions, and on the north sides of rich hills, the beech, sugar tree, ash, maple, and elm were the prevailing growth, while the sycamore (pla tanus occidentalis) lined the borders of the rivers and creeks, where its roots could be refreshed by the running stream. A long these streams the red man pushed his light canoe, rejoicing in the wild freedom of the forest, and happily unconscious of the approaching fate which threatened his race, and was soon to banish all but his name from the face of the earth.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
