A Winter on Earth is a sequence of poems forming a narative about the physical and psychological challenges of living one winter in a log cabin in Goldstream Valley north of Fairbanks, Alaska. The unmistakable voice is that of Joseph Enzweiler, who has spent 30 years in "this handmade box of life" where ."even at noon, day remains a blue dust, the votive sun far south on the Alaska Range." He addresses the cabin door as: Friend, mute thing I shake hands with every day, who for twenty-five years let me escape in both directions. The book captures the stark beauty of this once remote area, where humans live in such an intimate relationship with nature. The collection is divided into eight sections corresponding to the months of winter. Each section is illustrated with a photograph taken by the poet while living in his carefully crafted sanctuary with his cats and his friends, reflecting on all these ."catastrophes / held back another winter by some / fortunate gift of warmth.
