Excerpt from A Treatise on the Steam Engine: Historical, Practical, and DescriptiveTo instruct students, it is necessary to state such elementary propositions in mechanics, as have a direct application to the subject of steam-engines, for this purpose a series of definitions are given in an introduction to the present volume. These definitions have been formed from a full examination of the works of the best writers on the theory of mechanics, viz., Belidor, Emerson, Smeaton, Hutton, Banks, Gregory, Robison, Young, and others. The author has endeavoured to preserve their modes of reasoning, and the mathematical accuracy of their conclusions, without employing the language of geometrical or algebraical analysis, but all quantities are represented in numbers, and their proportions established by the ordinary processes of arithmetic this plan has been adopted in order to render the principles very apparent to those who are not accustomed to any other mode of calculus.
