Excerpt from A Treatise on the Measurement of Electrical ResistanceThe determination Of resistance is the cardinal operation in electrical measurement, in the same sense that the comparison of masses is the cardinal operation in quantitative chemistry, or that of linear and angular distances in geodesy and surveying, and for similar reasons. The electrical resistance of many stable bodies is known to be a highly characteristic and permanent quality, and indeed is probably so of all its measurement in terms of other resistances is performed with great ease: the exactness of the result does not depend on very accurate construction of the apparatus used and this apparatus may be easily made of great sensibility.
