Excerpt from A Supplement: To the Books "the Milky Way" And "Infinity of the Starry UniverseThis Supplement to my books The Milky Way and The Infinity of the Starry Universe is intended to supply for general information, a summary of the evidence in support of my contention that the Milky Way is simply the result of our looking at its portion of the sky through a specially dark part of the atmospheric envelope through which we view the heavens. The Summary is intended for the reader of ordinary intelligence, who has no special astronomical learning that is much beyond the average knowledge of reading men, and to such, I think, the plain commonsense explanation of the Milky Way which I put forward will appeal.The supplement corrects some errors in the book, especially in the description of how the special darkness is produced which results in the Milky Way. It is, therefore, desirable that the supplement should first be read and then the evidence detailed in the book can be considered.The Milky Way has long been a mystery to astronomers, and various theories have been put forward as to its meaning, but when we think of the great intelligence which has undoubtedly been bestowed on the study of everything connected with the heavens, the mystery which will attach to the Milky Way in the near future, will be how the simple solution of it, which is offered in these pages, could so long have evaded discovery."The Infinity of the Starry Universe" deals with a theory, the theory of the non-extinction of light in traversing space, which has been accepted by astronomers, and is commonly quoted as indisputable proof of the finiteness of the Starry Universe. The theory is supported by a mathematical demonstration, and I point out the fallacy in this demonstration. It is not necessary that the reader should be a mathematician to enable him to follow my exposure of the fallacy.The book also supplies some diagrams and some further evidence in support of my contentions about the Milky Way, and indicates the importance of a recognition of the true character of the Milky Way in considering the question.
