Excerpt from A Popular History of the Insurrection of 1798: Derived From Every Available Record and Reliable Traditions
To those who would fain draw a veil over the past of this country, which, thank God, is still a nation, he would suggest that the struggles of a peo le for liberty form the most glorious page in their history, and constitute their most precious inheritance. We whose fathers have shed their blood in defence Of civil and religious liberty should be dastards, indeed, did we suffer the memory Of their struggles to be buried in oblivion. The Author shall deem himself well rewarded for his labour in the com pilation Of this work if, while recounting the deeds of the dead fathers, he should awaken to a brighter glow the sacred ¿ame of patriotism in the bosoms of the living sons.
